PRACTITIONER'S DATABASE

PROFILE: Annette Codner

MY BACKGROUND

I qualified from Marjon as a teacher in 2012 and relocated to Reading to complete my NQT year. After this, I returned home and taught in a small village school. I have been at Marine Academy Primary since 2014 when the school first opened, leading PE throughout this time. Starting the journey as a brand new school allowed me to gain invaluable experience including: designing our PE curriculum, managing the PE budget and ordering key resources.

To develop my understanding of PE and the role of PE Lead, I completed the Level 5 Certificate in Primary Education and the Level 6 Award in PE Subject Leadership. These qualifications greatly contributed to the standards of PE in my school as well as enriched my role as a Specialist Leader of Education and PE Hub Leader. As a result, I have a secure understanding of how to raise standards in Physical Education and have been able to successfully support PE Leaders in other schools.

Three years ago, I became a Middle Leader and this year I completed the Aspiring Senior Leader Programme. These experiences have really allowed me to think about what type of leader I am and how I can effectively support schools and other leaders.

I am really passionate about PE and absolutely love my job! I know how big the responsibility of leading PE in school is and how overwhelming it can be! I pride myself on being patient and understanding, taking situations in my stride with a positive outlook!

As well as being passionate about PE, I also love leading First Aid and Supporting Pupils with Medical Conditions in school. I am an accredited First Aid Training for Paediatric First Aid and have delivered courses where delegates have developed an understanding of First Aid and have gone away feeling confident to apply this knowledge. More importantly everyone had fun and were immensely positive about the sessions and how they were delivered!

MY AREAS OF EXPERTISE

• Delivering and sourcing high quality CPD

MY SUCCESS STORIES

With my role of Primary PE Hub Lead I have been able to organise high quality CPD opportunities for schools across the whole of Plymouth. I am really proud that the Dance CPD and the afPE Health and Safety CPD had over 30 attendees on each course!

I enjoy working with other schools and finding out about the great things that they do for PE. I completed School to School support with a PE Lead who was new to the role. As a result, the PE Lead was positive and able to complete her action plan for the year ahead as well as allocate PE and Sport Premium funding.
