PRACTITIONER'S DATABASE
PROFILE: Penny Brown
MY BACKGROUND
I did my degree in Design and Technology Education so I feel I have a good understanding of the different material areas used across the range of disciplines. I have taught in Plymouth for nearly 12 years at both comprehensive and grammar so I have experience of teaching in different styles and to a range of ability levels.
I have progressed to a joint head of department role and enjoy working with a strong team to raise the profile of DT.
MY AREAS OF EXPERTISE
My primary specialism is food and nutrition and I currently follow the Eduqas Food Preparation and Nutrition syllabus at GCSE.
I have also delivered textiles up to A level and have experience of teaching graphics, resistant materials and some basic electronics.
MY SUCCESS STORIES
I really enjoy working with young people and developing their passions for cooking and healthy eating.
During my career I have explored opportunities for extracurricular activities and was instrumental in setting up a student led catering business where students made and sold refreshments to make a profit. They then used the money they earned to improve their equipment including buying personalised aprons.
This last year I have worked with a chef from GWR to deliver a project with year 9 students where they redesigned the menu for the Pullman service. They all really enjoyed it and loved the industry experience.
