PRACTITIONER'S DATABASE

PROFILE: Sarah Gossage

MY BACKGROUND

I qualified as a Teacher in 2010 specialising in early years. I have spent the majority of my career teaching in the Foundation stage and I absolutely love it! During this time, I have been part of redesigning our Foundation unit to create a communication friendly, engaging space for all children. I have been involved in multiple moderations, Ofsted inspections and recently taken part in trialling the new baseline assessments proposed for 2020. In 2018, I became the Early Years lead. I have really enjoyed developing leadership skills and supporting new members of my team.

I have a huge passion for creating enabling environments for children that promote independent choices and learning. I believe that developing strong Oracy skills in the Foundation stage supports children to reach their full potential. This interest has influenced my participation in research based training to help further develop my practice in this area.

I am also part of the Maths team and have been supporting the use of manipulatives and mastery in maths across the school. I enjoy working and supporting others to help them create the best learning opportunities for their children.

MY AREAS OF EXPERTISE

-Engaging environments (inside and out)
- EYFS Assessment and data analysis
- OAP cycles (Observation, Assessment and Planning)
- Planning and delivery for Phonics teaching
-Planning and delivery of number/shape, space and measure
-Communication friendly spaces
- Development of Oracy/sentence stems in Early Years.

MY SUCCESS STORIES

As the Early Years lead at Salisbury Road I have successfully supported new teachers/TA’s to my Foundation team who have no experience of the EYFS – developing their confidence in using the Development Matters curriculum, creating meaningful observations and ensuring good role modelling and questioning.

As a lead teacher across the Learning Academies Trust I have supported Early Years practitioners in others schools to develop their teaching, planning and environments. I have also had the opportunity to be part of a LAT EY group to develop our rationale and intentions as an EY group. This has also been an excellent opportunity to share good practice and support each other in creating the best early years environments for our children.
