The EMA Hub provided by Plymouth Ethnic Minority Achievement Team working in partnership with PTSA, offers termly twilight CPD sessions, available to all schools and suitable for teachers across phases. Planned in response to the needs of the city, training is focused on supporting and promoting racial equality and cultural diversity in schools.
In the Eye of the Storm, the art of Ukraine
Outline: TThis session, inspired by the Royal Academy of Art exhibition of the same name, takes a look at the modernist art of Ukraine, created against a backdrop of collapsing empires and a
struggle for independence. Despite such profound upheaval, modern art, characterised by bold experimentation with vibrant colours and abstract forms, has flourished in modern Ukraine, despite remaining a little-known part of European culture. The RA currently houses many artworks on loan from Ukraine’s national museums to safeguard them from the ongoing Russian invasion. These works were removed from the capital, Kyiv, in a secret convoy just hours before bombing in the city in November 2022.
As Plymouth provides a safe refuge for children and young people from Ukraine, we strongly encourage teachers to join us in this session exploring ways of including study of this art
within our curriculums.
The session is led by Lucinda Ross, who alongside leading on ethnic minority achievement within the local authority, holds an MRes. and PhD in Art History, and will no doubt offer a fresh insight to teachers across all phases.
