Maths – Manipulatives: Going Back to Basics KS2
Event Description: A half day session from Jo Cronin who is a freelance Maths consultant working across the South West. Jo has a wealth of knowledge and experience from her work with 200+ primary schools. Her training is always lively, up-to-date and meets the needs of all learners.
This training will support participants in using a range of manipulatives so they feel more confident in using these resources with the children in their classrooms and have knowledge of how they help to expose key mathematical structures.
Aims/Objectives: Manipulatives are an essential part of maths lessons as they help learners to experience the maths physically – helping develop their understanding using concrete materials – before moving onto pictorial representations and then onto the abstract.
This course aims to increase teacher confidence in using manipulatives within their own classrooms so the pupils in their classrooms are able to understand the links between the manipulatives and the mathematical ideas they represent.
Outcome:
• Use manipulatives with more confidence within their own classrooms.
• Know how manipulatives can be used in a variety of ways.
• Identify which manipulatives are effective in exposing different maths structures.
